I Just Read... "Why Evolution Is True" by Jerry A. Coyne

.
I confessed last week to being a bit of a science geek. (In that case I was blogging about a brilliant book called The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot) This does not mean I am a scientist, but it does mean that I am interested in science and love to read books about science that are written such that they can be understood by a layperson such as myself. This week I am confessing to a particular science geek niche that I am particularly fond of: I love books about evolution.
.
My favorite book of the summer, so far, is about evolution, and that includes all the fiction AND nonfiction that I’ve read. Why Evolution Is True by Jerry A. Coyne is perhaps the best book I have ever read on the subject of evolution, or perhaps it was written with the proper amount of information with an accessible style perfect for my level. Can’t say for sure. But I can recommend this book for others who are interested in the subject.
.
Coyne gives all kinds of wonderful examples that are evidence to the debate which still rages in some quarters about Creationism (Intelligent Design) and the Theory of Evolution. His examples are very clear and make his points beautifully, some with illustrations to further clarify.
.
The product description from the publisher says this: “In the current debate about creationism and intelligent design, there is an element of the controversy that is rarely mentioned – the evidence. Yet the proof of evolution by natural selection is vast, varied, and magnificent. In this succinct and accessible summary of the facts supporting the theory of natural selection, Jerry A. Coyne dispels common misunderstandings and fears about evolution and clearly confirms the scientific truth that supports this amazing process of change. Weaving together the many threads of modern work in genetics, paleontology, geology, molecular biology, and anatomy that demonstrate the “indelible stamp” of the processes first proposed by Darwin, Why Evolution Is True does not aim to prove creationism wrong. Rather, by using irrefutable evidence, it sets out to prove evolution right.”

Jerry A. Coyne has been a professor at the University of Chicago in the department of ecology and evolution for twenty years. He specializes in evolutionary genetics and works predominantly on the origin of new species.
